The Meridian Sports Club in Fullerton, CA was again host to the Ektelon Nationals and this year the event brought in almost 450 players. A huge thanks to longtime Team Ektelon player, Mickey Bellah, who is the Sports Director at The Meridian Sports Club and of course Darryl Warren for always dressing the clubs to perfection, leaving no doubt that Ektelon is in the house! Thanks guys for all you do to represent us!! Also special thanks to Kris Kaskawall who was on hand at the Ektelon Booth to take care of all of your Ektelon product needs. There were so many Ektelon highlights during the five days that it’s impossible to list them all, but here’s a look at a few of the most important Ektelon happenings from the event.
Thanks to our connection with the Meridian Sports Club through Mickey Bellah, Ektelon is able to secure a private room for the important Ektelon meetings that take place leading into the 2013/2014 season. At the top of that was product video shoots throughout the week featuring all of indoor and outdoor pros mugging spots for the camera. Look for a new website to be launched in the near future! Similarly, Ektelon was able to secure the Pavo Room for our largest Team Ektelon meeting of the year on Saturday morning. Keeping our Team Ektelon players “in the know” has always been a priority for Ektelon and that fact did not waiver when face to face with our Team Ektelon players. The meeting was well attended with over 100 players in present and assortments of goodies were given out to the team.
One of the new items you could find at the Ektelon Booth was the Limited Edition GOLD EXO3 RG Toron Lite racquet. Ruben Gonzalez was using this racquet all weekend while he and partner Scott Winters won the Men’s Centurion Division. Markie Rojas, Bobby Horn, Jose Diaz, and Veronica Sotomayor could be seen playing with racquet as well as Rhonda Rajsich who made quite a splash by again winning the USA Qualifying Division with a two game win over Janel Tisinger in the finals. Another awesome season for you Rhonda and we’re all so proud that you represent our brand with the class that you always show.
Ektelon made it two for two in the USA Qualifying Division with Markie Rojas defending his title from last year. Markie has had quite the season, starting with winning double gold in his final year at the 2012 Junior World Championships. He represented Team USA in March at the Pan American Champions by bringing home silver medals in the singles and doubles. Following that trip he made his first IRT Tier 1 semi-final, and then a few weeks later made the quarterfinals at the Stockton Pro Am, a Tier 1 pro stop in his hometown run by Ektelon Staff Member, John Ellis. Meeting Markie in the finals was good friend and training partner David Horn. David came into the tournament on a mission and breezed thru the Team Qualifying draw until he faced a red-hot Markie in the finals. Markie was on fire and defeated Horn in two straight games. It was a proud moment as they both earned spots on the US National Team.
Jose Rojas was the star of Ektelon in the Men’s Pro Division, as the recent University of Pacific graduate made it the semi’s finals. With his quarterfinal win over Chris Crowther this guaranteed him the season ending ranking of #4. We’re very proud of Jose and all of his recent accomplishments and we look forward to seeing him reach his full potential now that he can be dedicated full time to playing the tour.
Naturally the event isn’t only about the professional players as there were over sixty amateur divisions taking place along side the pros. At the top of the importance list, was the dedication to recognizing the Military Racquetball Federation (MRF) and the Wounded Warrior Project. Team Ektelon Military ERA, Fred “Rabbit” Rogers, captured double gold in the Military Divisions. Nice job Rabbit! Special thanks to Hank Marcus, Steven Harper and many other Team Ektelon Military players, as Ektelon is at the forefront of the racquetball portion of the Wounded Warrior Project and of course leads the way with the MRF.
Ektelon Vice President, Scott Winters wasn’t the only staff member winning a national title this weekend. Mike Orr captured gold in the Men’s 35+ Singles Division after missing last year due to injury and doubles specialist Aimee Ruiz captured double gold in the Mixed Open and Women’s Pro Doubles fending off a tough team from Ecuador one of which was newly signed team member Veronica Sotomayor.
A big congrats to all of our Team Ektelon Finalists, especially our NEW Ektelon National Champions!! We’re proud you and more importantly, we appreciate the loyalty that Team Ektelon has displayed over the past year. It’s Junior and Outdoor Season now and coming up in mid June is the Junior Olympics in Des Moines, IA and the WOR Championships in Huntington Beach, CA in mid July. Get outside and give outdoor a try, you won’t regret it. Stay tuned for more exciting Ektelon information over the summer months.
